Champeta Criolla

GRUPO SON PALENQUE

Son Palenque
Afro Colombian traditional music at his best

Son Palenque is a legendary afro-Colombian band, founded in the beginning of the 80’s in the city of Cartagena (Caribbean coast), by the singer and composer Justo Valdez. Since then, this 7th people band has recorded 8 LP's of traditional Afro music, mixed with African and psychedelic influences. All their members come from San Basilio de Palenque, a very important village in the history of afro-Colombia.

Palenque de San Basilio was founded by black maroons (running away from slavery), and has preserved many African traditions, as an Afro-Hispanic Creole language, the only one existing today in the Americas. The musical traditions of Palenque are very close to the music of central Africa, and the Bantu area (Congo, Angola, Cameroon).

The music of SON PALENQUE has been reissued in the last years in Europe, in many compilations of Colombian and tropical music, as their music is very much appreciated by collectors and music lovers around the world.  ( see the compilation “Palenque Palenque”, on Soundway label)

The band plays rhythm as cumbia, chalupa, Bullerengue, lumbalu (played for funerals and other rituals), Son de Negro, and a huge variety of african rythms. The band concerts are like a journey through the history of afro-colombian music and culture, and the history of all the musical exchanges between Africa and America, during centuries of colonial history.

Justo Valdez, lead vocal and composer, comes from a prestigious musical dynasty. He’s the son of “Ataole”, one of the best tambour players from Palenque, and was also part of the Batata family, the Valdez Salgado. The band recorded their first single in 1982 for the record label Orbe and were considered pioneers since most of their songs were sung in Palenquero. Ataole died, but the group continued and recorded two LPs for Felito where they incorporated percussion from Palenque with influences from Africa, the French Caribbean and soukous from Congo. Here we find three songs “El Sapo,” and “Palenque Palenque” (with Michi Sarmiento on Sax!!) recorded by Eduardo Dávila, and “Dame un Trago”. These two LPs opened a new path for Afro-Colombian music that the group has continued to explore until today.

This is the latest project of Palenque Records (label that gave an international scope to the Creole Champeta at Tabalá Sextet at The Jolly Ambulances, and produced the posthumous album Paulino Salgado "Batata"), whose goal is to promote knowledge and transmission of the popular traditions of Afro-Colombia in Europe. The new album of SON PALENQUE would be released in 2011 by Palenque Records.

PALENQUE RECORDS, the new afro-colombian label, presents in exclusivity this compilation of CHAMPETA or TERAPIA CRÉOLE. New black rhythm from the colombian caribbean coast, Champeta is one of the most inventive popular musics of our time, and also the most unknown for european public.
The Champeta musical style, mix of Soukous, Mbaqanga &  Highlife associated to the burning caribbean vibrations (Rap-Ragga-Reggae, Haitian Compas, Socca & Calypso), is the new musical cocktail that shakes the giants Sounds-Systems of the blacks villages.
For this record, PALENQUE RECORDS called MC IBA, deejay,  african musicologist & one of the best ears in Paris and West Africa. This compilation includes the biggest successes of the short Champeta story, like the famous hit "LA TURBINA" by ELIO BOOM, who sold more than 80000 copies in the caribbean. This music drives everybody crazy in Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana & in others islands, where it's the king over the feet of the most demanding dancers.
African rythms of the world, mixed with rythms from the colombian caribbean coast, meet in Cartagena in this new groove afro-punk, great synthesis of the constant trips made by music between Africa & the Black American continent.

Ref 1979312 ( Buda Records - Universal )

At one hour far from Carthagene, on the Colombian Caribbean coast, one can find the village of the first free Blacks of America :  Palenque de San Basilio.
In this village was born in the Twenties the first group of Montuno Sound ever existing in Colombia. A group of peasants adopted the Cuban Sound and mixed it with the cumbia, the bullerengue and the chalupa : the "palenquero sound "was born. They created this new musical style whereas they were working with their axes and machetes in the cane plantations.
In Palenque, in this free African nation, are now living the musicians of Sexteto Tabalá, descendants from humble peasants who decided one day to add a little Colombian savour to the Cuban Sound.
"The true Sound has been disappearing everywhere in the world.  We are the only ones who play this music the way they played it before, with old traditional instruments ", says the "maestro" Cassiani, leader of Sexteto Tabalá.
"We play with drums, bongos, maracas, guiro, clave and Marimbula (African instrument equivalent to the double bass).  We do not need any guitar nor trumpet.  Percussions and voices are enough for this sextet, kind of mini symphony orchestra of "monteadrentro sound".
The musicians of Sexteto Tabalá are popular stars, Sound true legends...
Señoras y señores, come to dance with Sexteto Tabalá, the kings of afro-Colombian Sound!!

PALENQUE RECORDS is proud to present you a new vibration from the Caribbean coast of Colombia

"Palenque de San Basilio" is a compilation of traditional songs and musics of a little Colombian area ignored until now, Palenque de San Basilio, village of the first free Blacks of the New-World. There, in this cradle of African culture, appeared the lumbalù, chalupa and bullerengue funerary songs, sung in kikongo and kimbundu dialects
You will meet "Las Alegres Ambulancias" and their ancestral autochtone music, like the bullerengue, afro rhythm derived from the cumbia.  Their music is the result of a combination of African popular musics from the Sixties: zaïrian soukous, South-African mbaqanga, cameroun makossa, and Nigerian and ghanean high life.
Also in this compilation;  "Oriki Tabalà" (also known as the "Sexteto Monasito di Benkos" when he sings sexteto music), who represents a new time of the palenquera music:  he puts into traditional music the sounds of champeta and modern African music.
Another star of this music in the disc, "Sexteto Tabala", mixture of Cuban Sound and palenqueros rhythms. Most of their songs are ploughing songs (track 17), and others, like Cortaron a Helena (track 7), new title, are sounds which were generally sung during funerals
Concerning Ciquito's compositions, farmer, guerissor and especially authentic troubadour, are a mixture inspired by vallenato, bullerengue, cumbia and sexteto.  Finally, Cha Ines and Cha Pabla will bring you back into the past with their homage to the biggest singers from old times.
Let you seduce by this original compilation, which will make you discover the biggest singers of these unique rhythms, living testimonys of a "New" Africa in Latin America, mixes of traditions and new emergent kinds

PRESENTS :

BATATA Y SU RUMBA PALENQUERA

Ref 24.127 ( Network - Harmonia Mundi)

Batata, the big voodoo Maestro of afro-Colombian percussion comes with his first album with his Rumba Palenquera "Radio Bakonga".
It is the first production of this legendary musician now missing, coming from the village of Palenque, located in the mountains not far from the Colombian Caribbean coast, place where the first free Africans settled,.
His musician career began in childhood, when he played during African ceremonies. Then he played during many years as drum head and writer in the group of the Colombian diva Toto Momposina. This is the time when the first African discs of high-life from Ghana, the soukous of Zaire and the afro-beat of Fela Kuti appeared on the Caribbean coast. Little by little, this music mixed with the authentic roots to create a new musical style :  the champeta criolla.  For much, Batata is the king of champeta.
For this Network production, Champeta-Man joins together the musicians of Batata with some stars of Congolese music:  Rigo Star and Dally Kimoko in the sebenes of fire, (who wrote biblical pages of Soukous with M'Billia Bell, Tabu Ley, Soukous Star, Papa Wemba and Koffi Olomide among others), and 3615 Code Niawu, the star of the organizers, doing the vocal animations.
This album is a Road Movie, from Palenque to Kinshasa, Cartagena, Habana, Yaounde, Paris and San Pablo;  a journey through the memory of Batata, a come-back  to the sources, through the veins of Africa and all the ancestors of Palenque. Ladies & raggas:  enjoy with the sounds of this ancestral music ;  This is roots music, Champeta roots!!!  from ColombiAfrica to the world.

SYNOPSIS :
This documentary tells the story of the CHAMPETA or CREOLE TERAPIA, one of the most innovative, ignored and marginalized musical kinds of Colombia and perhaps of Latin America. This musical movement, which mixes African rhythms like Soukouss from Congo (ex-Zaire), Mbaqanga from South Africa and Highlife from Ghana-Nigeria, with rhythms of the French and English Speaking West Indies (Haïtian "Compass ", Socca, Calypso, and Reggae), runs as a Master on dancers 'feet all along the Colombian Atlantic Coast, from Turbo to Riohacha.  Born in the black districts from Carthagena at the end of the Seventies, and in villages like Palenque de San Basilio, this Afro-Colombian rhythm, made popular by some fish salesmen, shoeshiners and self-educated musicians of popular origin, is going to extent and to conquer all the country thanks to its West-Indian and Colombian rhythms.  The documentary is a portrait of CHAMPETA's most famous artists and discjockeys, as well as the story of the birth of this music, which looks like the one of Reggae and Rap in Jamaica and in the United States.  One of its goals is to make known the talent of these artists, humble people who built alone and without any help all the necessary structure for the production and the distribution of this music:  independent labels, recording studios, disc stores... and a public which shows its support at every new production. African rhythms of the whole world, mixed with the rhythms of our Colombian Caraibes, meet in Carthagena to mix with the new vacile efectivo of Creole Terapia.

MENTION OF HONOR - BARTOK PRICE in the Festival "Bilan du Film Ethnographique" - Paris, 2001

SYNOPSIS :
This film is dedicated to the African culture in Colombia, sight and told through the prism of its music. Traditional rhythms bring us back to the past, to the ancestors and the bonds with Africa; and the modern music played by young people brings us back to the present, in a "pluri-ethnical and multicultural" country full of contradictions.  On all the Colombian Caribbean coast, African drums resound since the time of the colony.  Initially there were Cumbia and Bullerengue, African rhythms brought back by the slaves in the colony time.  Then there was the Sound, music from Cuba which arrived to Colombia in the 1920s. It settled in the deepest afro-Colombian tradition:  the one of the black maroons' descendants who fled slavery.  In Palenque de San Basilio, maroon village founded in the XVI° century, the SEXTETO TABALA (which means "drums of war" in afro-Colombian Creole) has been playing "Palenquero Sound" for more than 50 years.  But the story of Palenque does not stop there:  from the trunk of the tradition are pushing at fast pace the branches of modernity.  Today, the black maroons from Palenque invade the close big cities (Carthagena, Barranquilla) looking for a better future.  It is in Carthagène, colonial city which was one of the larger slavery ports, where the new music from the Colombian blacks was born:  the Champeta, hot mix of Zaïrian Soukous, afro-Colombian rhythms and caribbean influences (Socca, Calypso, reggae...).  Exclusive music of the city' s poor and disinherited people, Champeta swept everything on its passage.  Salsa and Cuban Sound were totally forgotten;  the African music was the detonator of an extraordinary musical movement, awaking the fire of a hidden ancestral memory.  Far from the large music major companies of the capital, some black peasants who just arrived in town provided the foundations of the musical movement of Champeta.  Looking for cheap stars, they took from the reserve of local desillusioned youth to record successes of creole Soukous:  caïds from the streets or street hawkers, they all sing the everyday life of their barrio in popular rhythms of Zaire or Nigeria.  The kings of Champeta have no palace, their kingdom's courts are the beaches and the streets of Carthagena.  They are the kings of another marginal Colombia, left apart, that even Colombian people ignore:  the African Colombia.
